The NFF said in a statement:

"After careful consideration of a memo presented by chairman of the technical and aevelopment sub-committee, the txecutive committee endorsed a proposal for the appointment of Mr Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, following the end to the relationship with Mr Gernot Rohr.
"However, the committee resolved that Mr Augustine Eguavoen, named the interim Head Coach, will lead the Super Eagles to the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon with Mr Peseiro only playing the role of Observer.
"It was unanimously agreed that the AFCON is a good avenue for Mr Peseiro to launch a working relationship with Mr Eguavoen, who will revert to his role as Technical Director (hence Mr Peseiro’s immediate boss) after the AFCON."

Nigeria fired Gernot Rohr two weeks ago and technical director Augustine Eguavoen was appointed take over as temporary manager until a new coach is named.

It was gathered that former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was contacted by desperate NFF president Amaju Pinnick who reached out to the Portuguese to help search for a formidable coach.

Now, Peseiro has been officially appointed and he will take charge of the team ahead of the World Cup qualifying play offs billed for March.

Osimhen still doubtful for AFCON

Sports Brief earlier reported that Nigeria’s chances of having Victor Osimhen participate at the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations look bleak as Napoli surgeon Professor Gianpaolo Tartaro says only a miracle will see the striker participate.

Osimhen is recuperating from multiple fractures on his cheek following a clash with Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar on November 21.

He has returned to training after successful surgery and the 23-year-old has been named in Nigeria’s 28-man squad for the AFCON tournament by Super Eagles interim coach Augustine Eguavoen.
