Since the tournament's inception in 1960, the Euro Trophy champions often keep it until the next edition after every four years. The famed Cup was modified and made larger. Here is everything that you should know about the coveted UEFA Euro trophy.

History of the Euro Trophy

According to Goal, the Euro Trophy's name was derived from the first UEFA Secretary General's name, Henri Delaunay and was thus known as the Henri Delaunay Trophy. Though he died five years before the inaugural competition in 1960, he was the brains behind the idea of the European championship cup, which his son, Pierre Delaunay, made.

In 2008, the Henri Delaunay Trophy was remodelled for the first time and made larger since it was smaller than other major cups. UEFA has modified it to match the scale and size of Europe's most famous international soccer event.

After the 2008 modifications, the trophy weighs 8 kilograms or 18 pounds. It is made of sterling silver and is 60 centimetres or 14 inches tall.

The cup is 2 kilograms or 4.4 pounds heavier and 18 centimetres or 7.1 inches longer than the old one. Unlike the old one, the current one does not have a marble plinth at the bottom, as the silverware had to be enlarged for stability.

The names of the champion nations, previously inscribed in French on plaques affixed to the plinth, are now written in English beneath the title Coupe Henri Delaunay on the back of the trophy.

West Germany, the 1972 and 1980 European Cup winners, are engraved on the Henri Delaunay Cup as Germany. Since 2016, UEFA has returned the juggling boy previously removed from the Cup's back, per Bundesliga.
