The Italian sports publication Tuttosport created the award in 2003, and Ajax sensation Rafael van der Vaart was presented with the first trophy. Once a player achieves Golden Boy status, they are only eligible to receive the award once, which ensures that the spotlight can shift to other promising young athletes who merit recognition. This prevents, for instance, a star 17-year-old from winning the prize three years in a row.
