Finidi George's era as manager of the Nigerian team has continued to be greeted with scepticism.

The 53-year-old, who was last month officially appointed as the permanent coach of the Super Eagles, is faced with the daunting task of clinching victories against South Africa and the Benin Republic.

The former Enyimba manager, however, appears to have done little to quell these doubts that have heralded the country's footballing scenes since his announcement as coach of the Super Eagles and his squad list for the crucial fixtures has further divided opinions among fans and stakeholders alike.

Nonetheless, amid palpable scepticism, former captain of the Super Eagles, Segun Odegbami, has disclosed a key ingredient that would be pivotal to Finidi's success as coach of the Nigerian team.

Odegbami’s essential ingredient for Finidi's success

In his column on Complete Sports, the 71-year-old emphasised a vital factor that could determine Finidi's success as manager of the Super Eagles.

The 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner, who lauded the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for appointing an indigenous manager to lead the Super Eagles, highlighted the importance of Finidi assembling a talented team as crucial to achieving success.

"His [Finidi’s] success will depend on how many exceptionally talented players he can quickly bring together to form a team," Odegbami wrote.
"It's helpful if several players come from the same club or league. However, the most important thing is having very gifted players in every position. Nigeria is on the way to achieving that."

Finidi's first squad list as manager of the Nigerian team indicates his boldness in selecting individuals he believes suit his style of play and tactics.

The 53-year-old will be hoping the players he has assembled can help him kick off his tenure as coach of the Super Eagles with victories against South Africa and the Benin Republic.

Finidi gets a massive boost

Sports Brief previously reported that Nigeria’s coach, Finidi, has received a significant boost ahead of the June international fixtures.

The 53-year-old has welcomed the news of Victor Osimhen’s return from injury. The forward had been sidelined for the final stretch of the Italian Serie A season due to his injury.
