Southampton’s play-off match-winner Adam Armstrong was hilariously caught in premature celebrations of his side’s return to the Premier League.

The English striker was the difference for his team, scoring the only goal in the 1-0 victory on Sunday, May 26.

Thanks to the win, the Saints returned to the Premier League on their first attempt, while Leeds will have to endure another season in England’s second-tier league despite amassing 90 points in the 2023/2024 season.

Towards the end of the game at Wembley, Amstrong got ahead of himself as cameras caught him embarking on premature celebrations, albeit by accident.

After more than 11 minutes of injury time, referee John Brooks blew the whistle, sending Armstrong into a brief celebration.

According to talkSPORT, the 27-year-old took off his shirt and ran towards fans before realizing his hilarious mistake as the referee was yet to blow for full-time. Instead, the whistle Armstrong reacted to was for a foul on a Leeds United player.

Lucky for the striker, the referee did not pay too much attention to his antics and instead brandished a yellow card for his teammate Joel Aribo, who committed the foul.

Armstrong’s stats this season

Despite the embarrassing moment, Armstrong’s excitement was fully justified.

According to Transfermarkt, the striker has been in decent form for Southampton this season, scoring 24 goals and getting 13 assists across all competitions.

Arguably, his most important strike of the season came when he tucked the ball past Leeds’ goalkeeper, Illan Meslier in the 23rd minute on Sunday.

He will be hoping to carry his form into the Premier League next season, although his previous stints in English top flight have been tough.

Harry Maguire’s dig at Leeds

Sports Brief also reported on Harry Maguire’s subtle dig at Leeds United after the Championship play-off final.

The Manchester United defender took to social media with an interesting post immediately after full-time.

His post came just a day after Manchester United won the FA Cup at the expense of Manchester City.
