There are just eight games to go in this season’s DStv Premiership.

While the tile race was decided at the beginning of May, the race for the eighth spot in the league promises to be good.

Kaizer Chiefs currently occupy eighth spot on the DSTv Premiership table but will have a struggle to hang onto it.

The top eight teams qualify for next season’s MTN8 competition, and with seven places already decided, the fight is one to secure the last spot.

With five teams in the running for that final placing, Sports Brief explains what each side needs to do to qualify.

5 DStv Premiership teams who can finish eighth

Kaizer Chiefs

The Amakhosi are the side in pole position at the moment, only due to goal difference.

Chiefs are tied with two other teams on the table on 36 points, but have a slightly better goal difference.

The Glamour Boys will end their campaign against Cape Town City, a team that have already been relegated this season and have only pride to play for.

Chiefs need a win to stand a chance of finishing in eight, but even that won’t guarantee them the spot. They would also need to score more goals than the two teams level on points with them.

AmaZulu FC

Like Chiefs, AmaZulu are another side that need a top-eight finish to save their season.

Usuthu brought in Spanish coach, Pablo Franco Martin, at the beginning of the season to help right the ship, and while progress has been slow, he has made a difference.

AmaZulu finished last season in 12th, just three points above the relegation zone.

This time around, they have a chance to make the top eight. To do that, they need to beat Lamontville Golden Arrows and hope that Chiefs and Polokwane City lose or draw.

Polokwane City

What an impressive season it has been for Rise and Shine.

The Limpopo-based side earned promotion to the Premiership last season, and won’t be relegated in their first season like Cape Town Spurs will.

Polokwane also have the chance to qualify for the MTN8 in their first time asking, but they need to beat TS Galaxy to stand a chance.

The Rockets beat Orlando Pirates and drew with Mamelodi Sundowns in their last two fixtures, and it will be no easy task.

Polokwane also need Chiefs and AmaZulu to lose or draw their fixtures, if they beat Galaxy, or at least outscore the Amakhosi and Usuthu if all three sides win.

Lamontville Golden Arrows

While the three sides above them are all tied on 36 points, Arrows are a point behind on 35.

With Steve Komphela at the helm of the KwaZulu-Natal side, Arrows are looking to improve on last season’s ninth-place finish.

A win over AmaZulu in their final fixture will see them match last season’s tally of 38 points but finish eighth this time.

They would also need Chiefs and Polokwane City to lose or draw to secure the final spot.

Chippa United

Things seem to be improving for the Chilli Boys.

Chippa survived the drop last season on goal difference alone, and this season are contesting a top-half-of-the-table finish.

After appointing Kwanele Kopo and Thabo September as co-coaches, the team have steadily climbed up the league table and are one positive result away from the MTN 8 competition.

The Chilli Boys will face Sekhukhune United in the final game, a team that are chasing a top-four finish.

As noted by Sowetan LIVE, Lehlohonolo Seema was placed on special leave by the side last week, so MacDonald Makhubedu and Paulus Masehe will be in charge for the last game against Chippa.

Chippa not only need to win, but also need Chiefs, AmaZulu and Polokwane City to lose.

5 players linked with Chiefs

As the Amakhosi prepare for the new season, they have been linked with a few new faces.

Kaizer Chiefs have already shown interest in Iqraam Rayners, Sports Brief recently reported.

He has scored 14 goals in the league this season, including five in one game for Stellenbosch FC.
