The Super Eagles are set to face South Africa in their next 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, which is a must-win for the three-time AFCON champions.

Nigeria drew their first two games in the qualifier ties against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, while Bafana Bafana won one before losing against Rwanda.

The Super Eagles' newly appointed coach, Finidi George, would need a win against South Africa to put the team back on track in the group phases.

Ahead of the Super Eagles tie against Hugo Broos' side next month, Sports Brief has lookedat Nigeria's top scorers of all-time in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria's top goal-scorers in World Cup qualifiers

10. Segun Odegbami (4 goals in 16 appearances)

The 1980 AFCON winner is low down on the list due to his goal-per-match ratio. He featured in 16 games during the World Cup qualifiers but failed to participate in the competition for Nigeria.

9. Victor Osimhen (4 goals in 8 appearances)

The former Lille striker is yet to represent Nigeria in the World Cup but has a good record in the qualifiers, with four goals in eight games.

The Napoli star could add to his tally when the Super Eagles face Bafana Bafana and Benin Republic in June.

8. Victor Agali (4 goals in 5 appearances)

The lanky former Nigerian international has a good record in World Cup qualifiers for the Super Eagles, having scored almost one goal per game.

7. Kelechi Iheanacho (5 goals in 14 appearances)

The former Manchester City forward represented Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and has a good record in the qualifiers.

The Leicester City star could add to that tally as he could be selected the Super Eagles's next games.

6. Ikechukwu Uche (5 goals in 12 appearances)

The former Villarreal striker was tipped to be the next big thing in the Nigerian national team set-up but didn't put in a good shift in World Cup qualifiers.

The striker failed to play at the main tournament and his goal-to-game ratio is also a bit poor.

5. Victor Obinna (5 goals in 10 appearances)

The former Inter Milan forward was a member of the Nigerian national team squad at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He contributed five goals in 10 appearances in the qualifiers.

4. Victor Moses (5 goals in 10 appearances)

The former Chelsea forward represented Nigeria at the 2014 and 2018 World Cup tournaments and was a crucial player in the qualifying phase, scoring five goals for the Super Eagles.

3. Sam Garba Okoye (5 goals in 6 appearances)

The legendary Nigerian striker didn't get the chance to play at the World Cup before his death, but contributed his quota by scoring almost one goal per game.

2. Yakubu Aiyegbeni (6 goals in 17 appearances)

The former Everton striker will most likely be remembered for his miss against South Korea at the 2010 edition of the FIFA World Cup, but he can't be overlooked when it comes to mentioning legendary Super Eagles players.

The Yak, as he is fondly called, netted six times for Nigeria in the World Cup qualifiers.

1. Obafemi Martins (10 goals in 12 appearances)

The former Super Eagles striker currently leads the list of Nigerian players with the most goals in World Cup qualifiers.

The former Inter Milan star went on to feature at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa but failed to score.

Nigerians react to Finidi's appointment

Sports Brief earlier reported on Nigerians reacting to Finidi George's appointment as Super Eagles head coach.

Most welcomed the choice while others were skeptical about how the NFF went about hiring the former player.
