Bayern Munich will clash with Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinals in what will be a renewal of old rivalries.

The semifinal first leg will take place on April 30, with Los Blancos travelling to the Allianz Arena.

Both teams made it to the top four by beating English opposition in the quarter finals, as Bayern overcame Arsenal 3-2 on aggregate, while Carlo Ancelotti’s side dumped Manchester City out via penalties after the tie ended in a 4-4 stalemate.

A Real Madrid vs Bayern matchup always promises fireworks, if recent history is anything to go by.

Furthermore, there is an interesting pattern in the Champions League that has to do with the two teams when they clash in the knockout stages of Europe’s elite competition.

Bayern vs Real Madrid head-to-head

According to UEFA.com, the two sides have met 26 times, with Bayern winning 12 times compared to Real Madrid’s 11. Three of their clashes have ended in a draw.

Real Madrid remains the most successful club in the history of the competition with 14 titles, with Bayern winning the title six times.

What happens when Bayern meets Real Madrid

Since 2010, Bayern and Real Madrid have met in the knockout stages on four occasions.

In 2012/13 Bayern overcame Real Madrid via penalties after the tie finished 2-2 on aggregate.

Less than two years later, the two teams met again in the Champions League semis, where Real Madrid completely destroyed their German counterparts 5-0 on aggregate.

In 2017, Los Blancos exerted another painful defeat to Bayern, this time in the quarter finals as Cristiano Ronaldo and co fought to a 6-3 aggregate win.

Their latest encounter in the knockout stages happened in 2018, when a Zidane led Real Madrid reached their third successive Champions League final with a 4-3 aggregate win, per BBC.

Based on these last four encounters, the team that triumphed and advanced to the next round went on to win the competition.

Of course, nothing is guaranteed, but the recent history is a strong pointer of what to expect in the latter stages of this year’s competition.

The winner of the semifinal clash will face either PSG or Borussia Dortmund in the final at Wembley on June 1.

Harry Kane’s warning to Jude Bellingham

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported on Harry Kane’s message to Jude Bellingham as the two England stars prepare to clash in the Champions League semi-final.

Kane's only chance of silverware this season is the Champions League. Otherwise, his first season in Germany may, unfortunately, end trophyless after leaving Tottenham last summer.
