Manchester United vs. Liverpool Preview

Form Guide

Liverpool will head into their showdown with Manchester United boasting a rich vein of form.

The Reds are unbeaten in their last seven league matches, recording six wins and a draw during that period.

They are coming off a 3-1 win over Sheffield United last Thursday, a result that propelled them to the top of the standings.

Manchester United, on the other hand, have struggled mightily of late, losing three of their last five league matches.

The Red Devils are coming off a gut-wrenching 4-3 loss to Chelsea on Thursday. They conceded two late goals to Cole Palmer deep into second-half stoppage time to leave Stamford Bridge empty-handed.

Recent Head-to-Head Matchups

There's something about this showdown that brings the best out of United. They knocked out Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals three weeks ago, beating them 4-3 in an extra-time thriller.

Amad Diallo sealed United's comeback victory, scoring the match-winner in the 121st minute off a brilliant counter-attack, per The Guardian.

Their first meeting in the Premier League this season ended in a goalless draw. Erik ten Hag set up a defensive game plan for the Red Devils to avoid a repeat of the 7-0 shellacking they experienced in the same fixture at Anfield last season.

Their last league meeting at Old Trafford ended 2-1 in favour of United. Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford scored the goals for the Red Devils in that win.

Team News and Injury Updates

Manchester United have mounting injury concerns ahead of their clash with Liverpool. The Red Devils had to withdraw Jonny Evans, Casemiro, and Raphael Varane against the Blues, leaving the side thin at the back.

They joined Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, and Anthony Martial on the sidelines, per The Standard.

Alejandro Garnacho is expected to be one of the first names ten Hag will put in United's starting lineup for the Liverpool match. He scored a brace in the game against Chelsea.

There's some good news for Liverpool, as Wataru Endo could return for Sunday's clash. However, they are still missing some key personnel, with Alisson, Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Stefan Bajcetic, and Thiago all injured.

Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Virgil van Dijk, Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez, and Caoimhin Kelleher are expected to retain their starting places for the United game.

Writer's Prediction

Liverpool edge past Manchester United 2-1.

Reason behind Manchester United's recent struggles

Sports Brief recently reported on the teams that have allowed the most shots in the Premier League in 2024.

Manchester United lead the list, facing a whopping 225 shots this year.

That's the most in Europe's top 5 leagues in 2024.
