A section of Arsenal fans has singled out one player for blame following their heartbreaking Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich.

The Gunners' hopes of conquering the tournament this season after an impressive run of form were dashed on Wednesday night after they suffered a 3-2 aggregate defeat against the Bundesliga giants in the quarter-finals.

Mikel Arteta's charges were looking to get the job done in Germany during their second-leg trip to Allianz Arena, having settled for a 2-2 draw in the reverse tie played at the Emirates Stadium last week.

However, the Premier League title challengers were unable to overcome a spirited Bayern side, who secured a 1-0 win at home to sail through.

According to The Guardian, Joshua Kimmich was the match hero for the hosts, with the midfielder scoring the all-important goal in the 63rd minute to send his side to the semis.

Arsenal fans blame player for defeat

Some Gunners fans have now picked on one player who they contend played a big part in their defeat away from home.

According to the supporters, Gabriel Martinelli is largely to blame for their loss, with some blaming the Brazilian for failing to track Kimmich in the run-up to Bayern's opening goal.

The angry fans took to social media to voice their frustration with the forward, insisting he should have done more to stop Kimmich from finding the back of the net.

@midblock_ tweeted:

"Martinelli needs to hang his head in shame."

@MoAmali noted:

"Martinelli lost Kimmich. Same way he failed to pick Bailey on Sunday. Needs to be more switched on."

@iam_elonel added:

"Martinelli making Kimmich look so good as RB is annoying."

@QueenAyoMich argued:

"Lol, this one says Martinelli lost Kimmich. His positioning is abysmal."

Another concluded:

"Missed our best chance and lost his man for the goal."
