  • Youcef Belaili has earned a reputation over the years for getting on the wrong side of referees
  • Belaili grabbed the hand of a female referee in an attempt to stop her from showing him a card
  • The Algerian international has been suspended and fined previously for attacking a game official

Youcef Belaili has once again landed himself in hot water over his conduct against officials.

The Algerian international has earned a reputation for being one of football’s bad boys over the years, earning himself numerous suspensions and fines.

Youcef Belaili has courted controversy once more for his actions toward a match official.

The winger has amassed 68 yellow cards over the course of his career, with his latest coming this past weekend during a game for MS Algiers.

Belaili receiving the yellow card wasn’t such an issue; it was his conduct during the process that got people talking.

The former AC Ajaccio player tried to grab the hand of the female referee in charge of the game as she reached into her pocket for the card and continued to argue with her after being booked.

Footage after the incident also showed that he tried kicking the ball at her while one of his teammates tried to calm him down.

Belaili’s history of ill-discipline

The MS Algiers is no stranger to getting into trouble and has often been punished for his attitude toward match officials in particular.

Afrik Foot reported that last month, the 32-year-old received a six-match suspension and a fine for unsportsmanlike behaviour towards a referee, but the matter was later appealed, and his suspension was reduced.

It was his second offence in the space of two weeks, and his latest run-in with a ref came after his return from suspension.

Last year, he was suspended by Ligue 1 side, Ajaccio, for failing to show up for training for three consecutive days. He also angered the club by behaving inappropriately toward supporters after a game, KingFut reported.

Cristiano Ronaldo almost punches referee

Belaili is by no means the only player to either attack a referee or come close to doing so.

Sports Brief also reported how Cristiano Ronaldo almost hit a referee during a Saudi Cup match.

The Al-Nassr star was shown a red card for striking an opponent and then turned his attention to the ref.
