  • An explosive scene of Pep Guardiola lecturing his players is going viral online
  • In the scene, the Man City boss tells off his superstars by threatening them
  • This came after City’s shock League Cup exit at the hands of Southampton

Pep Guardiola’s raw passion and enthusiasm for the game is highlighted in an upcoming Netflix documentary.

The Spaniard went on an untamed rant, threatening to bench all his players and replace them with academy stars after defeat to Southampton in the League Cup.

Guardiola’s unhinged speech had some notable quotes as the former Barcelona star completely tore into his superstars in the dressing room.

What happened?

In January 2023, City were in typical scintillating form, chasing an unlikely quadruple of the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League and League Cup.

But their aspirations were trimmed down to a treble dream thanks to Southampton’s brilliance on January 11, with the Saints claiming a shock 2-0 win at the St Marys’ Stadium.

It was a win that had many subplots, including the fact that it was Nathan Jones’ biggest moment during his brief tenure at the Southampton dugout.

According to BBC, goals from Sekou Mara and Mousa Djepeno were enough to send City home as Southampton advanced to the last four of the competition.

Guardiola benched Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne for the game, with the duo coming in the second half to try to make amendments in vain.

Guardiola’s rant

"Tell me the explanation for today. Tell me.," Guardiola could be heard telling his players after the match, per Manchester Evening News.

What ensued was a brilliant rant by the 53-year-old, as he accused his side of lacking humility and work ethic at a crucial time of the season.

He went on: "Honestly, do you think it’s normal what today we have done? For this club? Do you think it’s normal?! For the guys who travel, who don’t have money to pay for their heater at home, to come here to follow us to perform in this way? Do you think it’s normal? ….WOW."

Guardiola goes on to threaten the team by suggesting ‘the academy is ready’ should they fail to improve.

"‘Ah they scored a goal, ah a second one, oh it’s here, it’s there’. You want to play? You want the ball? You wanna move? You wanna fight? As a brother?” He said, adding, "Down to the earth, everyone guys. Work harder, work better. Be humble, be ambitious. Otherwise, the academy is ready.

It appears the speech did something to the Manchester City players who ended up closing the gap on league leaders Arsenal before winning a third straight title.

Their season would be wrapped up with FA Cup success and arguably Guardiola’s most important trophy in his Etihad tenure; the Champions League.

Pep Guardiola heaps praise on Gabriel

In other news, Sports Brief reported on Pep Guardiola’s gesture towards Gabriel Maghalhes after the Brazilian’s defensive masterclass on Sunday, March 31.

City drew 0-0 with Arsenal as Gabriel commanded proceedings at the heart of his team’s defence.

At full-time, Erling Haaland and Guardiola had some words for the centre-back.
