Former Sierra Leone International Killed in Road Accident Involving His Team, Port Authority

Tragedy struck Sierra Leone football club Port Authority FC was involved in a road accident which took the life of former Sierra Leone international Lamin Bangura.

The accident occurred on Tuesday night when the team was travelling for their match against Kahunla Rangers on Wednesday, March 27.

According to Gleaner Newspaper, Bangura died at the Rokupa government hospital. Other passengers received serious injuries and are in hospital receiving emergency care.

The Sierra Leone Football Association confirmed the news early Wednesday, March 27.

Port Authority are 11th in the 18-team Sierra Leone Premier League with 22 points after 18 matches.

Bangura was a beloved figure in Sierra Leone football and his death leaves an indelible mark in the West African nation.

He played for Horoya AC in Guinea and ASEC Mimosas during his playing days in the 1990s. He represented his nation many times.

The league will likely postpone upcoming matches as a sign of respect to those who lost their lives in the fatal road accident.

Sports Brief earlier reported on Sierra Leonean players training on a grassless pitch before a friendly match with Ivory Coast a few months ago.

Photos of players training on the dusty pitch elicited strong reactions from football fans on social media.

The Leone Stars did not qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. They took part in the 2021 edition, which was their first appearance in 25 years.

Sierra Leone fans target Salah

Sports Brief also reported on Sierra Leone fans targeting Mohamed Salah during a World Cup qualifier in Liberia.

With two minutes left in the game, a group of fans stormed the pitch to apparently attack the Egyptian star. Security teams rushed to stop the fans before they could cause any damage.

Mahmoud Trezeguet scored a brace as the North African giants strolled to a 2-0 win at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.
