How do European soccer leagues work? Europe has several domestic leagues that run their league systems, sometimes called pyramids. European football is governed by UEFA (Union of European Football Associations), with 55 national association members.

All members run their domestic league system, sometimes called the pyramid. At the top tier, each team plays the other twice, once at home and once away. The leagues include:

UEFA Champions League (UCL)

The league was founded in 1992 and is a continental competition that brings together top clubs from across the continent annually. Top-performing teams from each national association qualify in advance, while the other top-division clubs play in the initial games beginning in mid-July.

The 10 successful teams from these rounds enter the group stage, joining those that qualified before. They are then separated into eight groups. The runners-up and winners from these groups proceed to the final match. Real Madrid is the most successful UEFA club, boasting 14 wins as of March 2024.

UEFA Europa League (UEL)

This domestic league was previously known as the UEFA Cup and takes place annually. Clubs qualify to participate based on their national league performance. The league contains several teams that did not make it to the Champions League but were outstanding nationally.

Like the UEFA League, UEL follows the knock-out rounds and group stages before the finals. The winner automatically qualifies for the next Champions League, making the matches competitive and exciting.

UEFA Conference League (UECL)

This European League competition started in 2021/2022 and is lower than the other UEFA Leagues. The league brings together teams that did not qualify for the Champions or Europa League but performed well at the national level. The format is similar to the Europa and Champions League, and the winner qualifies for the Europa League.

In case of tied points, the league defines criteria for which one is ahead, usually with a higher goal difference over the season. The winning teams proceed to the playoffs. In the European League, promotion and relegation occur in the playoffs stage.

The English Premier League (EPL) is the most prestigious in the world, bringing together top teams from across the globe to compete for the League Trophy. It comprises 20 clubs and runs from August to May annually. Each team plays 38 matches each, both home and away.

How does the Premier League work? The teams accumulate points as they progress, and the team with the most points at the end of the season wins the Premier League Cup. The bottom three teams are relegated to the Europa Championship, the second tier, and replaced by three promoted from the Europa Championship.

How do American soccer leagues work?

The Major League Soccer (MLS) is the most prominent in America and Canada, boasting 29 teams as of March 2024. It follows the conference format and is divided into the Western Conference (14 teams) and the Eastern Conference (15 teams). Each team plays 17 away and home games per season, running from March to October.

The 14 Eastern Conference teams play six regional oppositions from the Eastern division and face the remaining seven teams twice per season. In the Western Conference, 11 teams face eight regional opposing teams thrice and the remaining teams on two occasions.

All teams from this conference play two matches against the Eastern opposition. The remaining two from the Western Conference play seven oppositions from the same conference on three occasions and meet the remaining five teams from the same conference twice. Each team from the Western Conference can play against three different oppositions from a different conference.

The regular season's winning team attains the Supporters’ Shield. If the winner is an American team, it gets a direct entry to the CONCACAF tournament.

How does the Bundesliga operate?

The German football league (Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2) differs from others in the playoffs. The league has two automatic moves between the divisions. The teams that finish 16th in the Bundesliga and third in the Bundesliga 2 compete for promotion and relegation.

The first contest takes place in the Bundesliga side, and the second happens at the home of the Bundesliga 2 team. The winner claims Bundesliga status in the next season. In case of a tie, the match goes into 15 minutes of extra time and penalties, if need be. The away rule does not apply in Bundesliga.

How do points work in soccer leagues?

The most common format is that any win earns a team three points, while a draw attracts one point for each. In cases where clubs attain similar points at the end of a season, the winner is determined using different criteria, like goal difference, number of goals scored, or head-to-head points.

Other methods used to determine the winner include considering the team with the fewest yellow cards, additional one-off matches, and drawing lots.
