Dani Alves has been released on bail after being held in custody for sexual assault, having reportedly posted a bail bond of €1 million (£850,000).

The former Barcelona and Brazil footballer was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison last month for non-consensual intercourse with a woman at a Barcelona nightclub in 2022.

On Monday, March 25, a court in Spain granted Alves permission to leave jail pending his appeal after he paid the required bail. The 40-year-old former defender has been in pre-trial detention since January 2023, per the BBC.

According to reports from the Daily Mail, Alves is expected to spend his first night of freedom since January 20 last year at his £4 million mansion in Esplugues de Llobregat, a suburb west of Barcelona.

What are the conditions for Alves' bail?

The release conditions include surrendering his Brazilian and Spanish passports to prevent him from leaving Spain and appearing in court weekly.

His lawyer highlighted that Alves had already served about a quarter of his sentence for sexual assault at the time of his conditional release request earlier this month.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Barcelona has decided to "revoke" Dani Alves' status as a club legend following the right-back's recent prison sentence.

The former Brazilian international received another setback as Barcelona reportedly opted to sever ties with him in light of the guilty verdict.

According to Get Football, citing Diario Sport, the Catalan club has chosen to rescind Alves' legend status.

Sports Brief also reported on Alves' brother, Ney, strongly denying rumours circulating on social media about the death of the Barcelona legend while in jail.
