  • Finidi George's tenure as Nigeria's interim coach started on a winning note
  • His Super Eagles side defeated bitter rivals Ghana in a friendly encounter
  • Leicester City's Kelechi Iheanacho has tipped him to take over the team permanently

Leicester City striker Kelechci Iheanacho has backed Finidi George to continue as Nigeria's coach after the March friendlies.

George was part of Jose Peseiro's staff, but the Portuguese left his role after his contract ended.

Peseiro's Nigeria reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations but lost to hosts Ivory Coast.

George's first match as interim coach started with a huge 2-1 victory over Ghana in an international friendly in Morocco, on March 22.

Many Nigerians, including former players, have asked the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to appoint a local coach, and George is one of the leading candidates for the role.

Iheanacho has worked closely with Geroge many times and feels he should continue as coach with the national team.

“The coach (Finidi) has done a great job, it’s short time for him to work with us. It’s just only him at the moment. Hopefully he will get more chance with the team,” Iheanacho said per Afrik-Foot.

George made a good impression after his Super Eagles side defeated their bitter rivals Ghana. He will have another chance to win another game when they face Mali on Wednesday, March 27.

Nigeria beat Ghana in friendly

Sports Brief earlier reported that Nigeria defeated Ghana in a friendly in Morocco, with Cyriel Dessers and Ademola Lookman scoring in either half before a late consolation from Jordan Ayew.

George's side made their intentions clear in the early after Iheanacho forced goalkeeper Lawrence At Zigi into a brilliant save.

It was a great performance from Nigeria as they bounced back in their first match since the 2023 AFCON final defeat to Ivory Coast.

Adepoju lauds George

Sports Brief also reported on former Nigeria international Mutiu Adepoju weighing in on Finidi George's appointment as Super Eagles interim coach.

Adepoju lauded his former teammate and wished him all the best as he leads his country in an interim capacity.
