  • Antony climbed off the bench to score a rare goal with his right foot
  • His goal pushed Man United's FA Cup tie against Liverpool to extra time
  • It was his second strike overall across all competitions this season

Manchester United winger, Antony, stunned many with his goal against Liverpool in the much-talked-about FA Cup quarter-final showdown.

The Brazilian forward, who arrived from Ajax Amsterdam amidst high expectations with a hefty price tag of £86 million in 2022, has struggled to replicate his form from his time in the Eredivisie.

Before the Liverpool match, Antony had only managed to score one goal across all competitions this season, coincidentally in the FA Cup against Newport County, as cited by The Standard.

Fate had it that the 24-year-old would score his second goal of the season, this time against Manchester United's arch-rivals, Liverpool.

For context, it was the former Ajax star boy's maiden goal at Old Trafford in 373 days, according to ESPN, highlighting his struggles in front of goal.

Antony scores with right foot

Antony came off the bench to level the score after Man United surrendered their early lead, with Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah scoring quick goals just before halftime.

In a crucial moment, it was the 'forgotten man', often criticized for his reliance on his preferred left foot, who came to Erik ten Hag's rescue. He deftly spun past Virgil van Dijk before curling the ball home with his less-favoured right foot.

Fans go 'crazy' after Antony's goal

The manner of his goal left many stunned, especially considering Antony's usual reliance on his left foot. Fans on social media were left in awe, struggling to comprehend how he managed to execute such a feat.

@AbsoluteBruno was left in bewilderment:

"Spun Van Dijk and scored with his right, Antony. I can’t believe it, man."

@BlessedOdoba added:

"What a comeback from a forgotten player!"

Another user, @CarlyOnYouSpurs, described Antony's strike as a 'miracle':

"This was the real miracle goal."

@JayJay__92 wrote:

"Give that man his flowers."

@real_Ifyarts light-heartedly claimed Man United boss Erik ten Hag would not believe it:

"Even ETH can't believe."

Ex-United star backs Antony to come good

In an earlier publication, Sports Brief reported that Antony had faced challenges since his high-profile transfer from Ajax to England, but his former teammate remains optimistic about his future.

Anthony Elanga, a former United player, has expressed his backing for Antony despite the difficulties he's encountered both on and off the field, as well as the criticism from fans.
