  • Manchester United winger Antony has struggled since joining from Ajax
  • The Brazilian has been criticised for his poor display and goal drought
  • Nottingham attacker Anthony Elanga has backed his former teammate

Manchester United winger Antony has been struggling since making a lucrative move from Ajax to England, but one of his former teammates believes he will come good.

United were involved in a long negotiation with the Dutch club because of reluctance to meet the asking price of the winger but eventually succumbed and paid £86 million.

Per The Athletic, the club's scouts valued the Brazilian attacker at just £25mil and warned the club off going above that, but pressure from Erik ten Hag pushed the deal through.

The player's performance has built a lack of trust in the manager's talent identification, and fans want the club to take his hands off recruitment.

Elanga backs Antony to thrive

Former United star Anthony Elanga has voiced his support for Antony amidst his struggles on and off the pitch and criticism from fans.

“Antony is a great player and a beautiful person. We had a lot of contact when I was at United, and we still talk sometimes now,” he told Soccernet via Sportskeeda.
“I am confident that he will score a lot of goals there. I could already see that during the training sessions… He will really be successful there.”

The Red Devils let go of the academy graduate due to lack of playing time, primarily because of their big-money signing’s presence, but it is proving to be a decision.

The Sweden international has scored five goals and provided six assists in 23 games for Nottingham Forest. At the same time, the United star’s only contribution came in the FA Cup win over Newport, a goal and an assist, despite playing 25 games this season.

Antony celebrates first goal of the season

Sports Brief reported on Antony celebrating his first goal for United this season, which came in the FA Cup fifth-round tie against League Two side Newport City.

The former Sao Paulo star hit two celebrations on the pitch and did not stop there. He sent a message to the fans on his Instagram, showing how much the goal means to him.
