  • Jose Peseiro's tenure as Nigeria's coach is now over
  • A Nigeria legend wants the NFF to hire a local coach
  • Peseiro led the Super Eagles to the 2023 AFCON final

Former Nigeria international, Segun Odegbami, has strongly criticised the departing Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro.

The Super Eagles hero wants a coach who will win trophies for the nations, unlike Peseiro.

The 1980 AFCON winner has advised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to hire a local coach to lead the team.

A few days ago, Peseiro announced that he was leaving his role as Nigeria coach, weeks after leading the Super Eagles to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final in Ivory Coast.

Although Nigeria lost once at the tournament, the performances were not convincing. The pragmatic approach worked throughout the competition but backfired in the final.

After years of underwhelming displays, Nigeria was looking to win their fourth AFCON title. Still, it was their best run at the tournament since 2013, when they won the title in South Africa.

Odegbami calls out Peseiro

Odegbami bagged a brace in the 1980 AFCON final to help his country win their first continental crown. He has urged the NFF to go for a local coach.

“Football is not rocket science, but a simple game. We have lots of Nigerians who have all the qualifications to take us to any level," via Afrik Foot.

The 71-year-old is baffled about why the Portuguese coach was rewarded for finishing second.

“Peseiro got a reward that has never been given to any coach in the world, not because he won the AFCON, but because he came second."
"We need a coach who will take us to win something because we are tired of coaches who cannot win anything for us.”

Stephen Keshi is the only local Nigerian to win the AFCON. He led the Super Eagles to glory in 2013. Brazil's Otto Gloria was Nigeria's coach in 1980, while Clemence Westerhof won the 1994 tournament, per Premium Times.

Possible Peseiro replacements

Sports Brief earlier listed five candidates for the Nigeria role after Peseiro's exit.

Nigeria legends Emmanuel Amuneke and Finidi George are possible replacements for Peseiro. Former Gambia coach Tom Saintfiet is also a candidate for the role.

Nigeria will be looking for a coach to lead the team to the 2025 AFCON and 2026 World Cup qualifying.
