  • The immediate future of Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro remains a subject of debate
  • The Portuguese manager's current contract is set to expire at the end of February 2024
  • William Troost-Ekong recently spoke about the future of the former Sporting CP gaffer

The future of Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, is a hot topic in Nigerian football circles.

The 63-year-old, who guided the national team to its first final at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), sees his current contract expire on February 29.

Following the team's impressive performance at the tournament, many Nigerian football fans and stakeholders are urging the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to extend the Portuguese coach's contract.

This is especially important considering that the Algerian Football Federation are actively pursuing Peseiro and offering him a contract worth an estimated ₤208,000 per month.

Nonetheless, amidst the speculation about Peseiro's future, Super Eagles vice-captain, William Troost-Ekong, has shared his thoughts on the coach's contract situation.

Troost-Ekong on Peseiro’s contract

During an interview with CNN World Sport, the 30-year-old shared his views on the manager's future.

When asked if he would like to see Peseiro remain as Nigeria's coach despite rumours of him moving to the Algeria job, the PAOK Thessaloniki star expressed his support:

"Yes. I believe the players are happy with him. Reaching the final is a significant achievement and something we can build on.
Regarding his plans, I tried to inquire before we left, and he said he would call me. I am just as in the dark as you guys, but I think all the players would be pleased to see him continue with the national team."

When pressed about whether he had received the call yet, he replied:

"No. I am still checking my phone, but nothing yet."

The former Real Madrid assistant coach has been at the helm of the Super Eagles since May 2022, with a record of 11 wins, four draws, and seven losses in his 22 games in charge.

Nigeria’s weakness against Ivory Coast

Sports Brief in another report stated that Super Eagles defender, Troost-Ekong, had identified Nigeria's weakness in the AFCON final against Ivory Coast.

The former Udinese star hinted at the team's failure to adjust to an attacking approach following the equaliser from the Ivorians as a crucial factor in the defeat.
