South Africa star Percy Tau could reportedly become the highest-paid footballer in Africa after he reportedly agreed on a new deal with Al Ahly.

With Tau's contract set to expire in June 2025, the Egyptian side have tied Tau to a new deal until 2028.

The new deal will see the Bafana Bafana international salary increase exponentially.

According to Egyptian outlets via KickOff, the 29-year-old will earn $5 million when his deal expires in 2028.

The report also adds that the forward will earn $1.2mil annually, which will increase by $100,000 in the first year, then $150,000, and $200,000 in the final season. He clarified his future with Al Ahly last month.

“I still have a contract [with Al Ahly] that I still have to respect. The focus is on the AFCON and trying to do something special here," via Far Post.

Tau joined the club in 2021 from Brighton & Hove Albion and is closing in on 100 appearances. He has won three CAF Champions Leagues and one league title at the club.

Tau is also coming off a phenomenal AFCON with South Africa, in which they finished third.

Percy Tau makes history

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Tau broke Quinton Fortune's record by becoming South Africa's all-time top scorer in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Tau scored his first goal in the competition in 2016 for Mamelodi Sundowns, then scored another for the Egyptian giants in 2022.

Fortune bagged two goals for Manchester United in the 2000 edition.

Fans criticise Percy Tau for missing penalty

Sports Brief, in a previous report, highlighted how Bafana Bafana fans reacted to Tau’s penalty miss against Mali in their opening 2023 AFCON game.

The attacker was presented with the opportunity to put Hugo Broos’ side into the lead from the penalty spot but squandered the chance.

The miss from Tau has since sparked a flurry of reactions, with many expressing their displeasure with the miss.
