  • South Africa Football Association President, Danny Jordaan, is under the spotlight
  • Hugo Broos' men received R46.9 million for securing third place in the AFCON 2023
  • Jordaan has refrained from disclosing the exact bonus figures for the Bafana players

South African Football Association (SAFA) president, Danny Jordaan, has remained tight-lipped regarding the bonus amounts that the association will allocate to the Bafana Bafana players.

Hugo Broos' men performed commendably in the just-ended Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 tournament in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, finishing third.

Despite earning R47 million for this, Jordaan has refrained from disclosing the exact bonus figures for the players.

The team returned to OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday, February 13, receiving a warm welcome after their impressive feat, clinching the bronze medal with a victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bafana’s first since 2000.

Controversy arose before the tournament when Jordaan initially hinted that the players would receive R7 million for winning the tournament. However, he later clarified that there had been confusion regarding currencies, retracting the statement.

"If they win, they get R7-million. If they lose, they get nothing. We want the team to focus and perform. We have, over a period of time, settled this team, and we don't want to waste time discussing unnecessary stuff,” he said, as quoted by News24.

Despite persistent inquiries upon the team's return, Jordaan remained elusive regarding the exact bonus amount, stressing that it depended on the Confederation of African Football (CAF). He asserted that the players were informed about the reward structure based on their performance in the tournament.

His stance on the matter remained firm, indicating that the allocation of bonuses from the prize money would be deliberated with the players before any disclosure.

Previously, reports surfaced in January suggesting that a memorandum of agreement was signed between the association's management and the players, outlining the terms and conditions.

As reported by SAFA, players available during this process included captain Ronwen Williams, Percy Tau, Siyanda Xulu, Veli Mothwa and Themba Zwane.

The team will now switch its focus to the World Cup Qualifiers set for June.
