  • Liverpool beat Chelsea on Sunday to win their 10th Carabao Cup
  • Virgil van Dijk scored the all-important goal in extra-time of the tie
  • The Red's victory could be a blessing in disguise for Man United

Liverpool's Carabao Cup triumph over Chelsea could be a blessing in disguise for Manchester United.

The Reds silenced Mauricio Pochettino's men 1-0 in the final played on Sunday, February 25, at Wembley Stadium to lift the tournament.

The encounter looked set to be decided via the shootouts after finishing goalless in regulation time.

However, Virgil van Dijk powered home a header with just two minutes left on the clock to win it for Liverpool.

According to Planet Football, the Reds' victory saw them become the most successful club in the history of English football.

Their triumph was enough to see them move above rivals United among the clubs with the most trophies - having won 68 of them, including 10 League Clubs.

The haul is one more than the Red Devils' 67, with their last coming last season when they lifted the Carabao Cup under Erik ten Hag.

Why Liverpool's EFL Cup is crucial for Man United

While Liverpool's Carabao Cup triumph will definitely leave United fans distraught, this could actually be good news for the club.

According to BBC journalist Simon Stoney, victory for Jurgen Klopp's men on Sunday means that the sixth-placed team in the Premier League table is guaranteed to play in Europe next season.

"Liverpool victory means sixth spot in PL will defo get a European place," Stoney posted.

United are currently the team that are placed sixth and are facing a daunting task of finishing in the top four following their disappointing defeat to Fulham on Saturday.

Liverpool, who are currently topping the charts, are on course to qualify for the Champions League next season, alongside Manchester City and Arsenal.

Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are the other two teams ahead of United, whose appearance in Europe could be decided by Liverpool's EFL Cup glory.

Last season, Manchester City helped Aston Villa qualify for the Europa Conference League after Pep Guardiola's charges lifted the FA Cup.

A similar scenario is expected this season in the event that the team that wins the FA Cup qualifies for UEFA's two main competitions by virtue of their league position.

How much will Liverpool cash from EFL Cup?

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Liverpool will not be taking home as much in prize money despite beating Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final.

Chelsea will be banking half the prize money the Reds will get after they finished as the runners-up.
