  • Victor Osimhen has left his mark as a legend for Napoli in the Italian Serie A
  • The Super Eagles striker is reportedly on the verge of leaving the Naples club
  • Arsenal, Chelsea, and PSG are reportedly interested in signing Osimhen

Victor Osimhen was an integral part of Napoli winning the Serie A scudetto for the first time in 33 years as his goals led the Naples club to the Italian league title in the 2022/23 season.

The 25-year-old forward, who joined the reigning Italian league champions in 2020, scored a whopping 26 goals to emerge as the Serie A top scorer in the process.

According to Vanguard, Osimhen’s feat in Italy with Napoli saw the Confederation of African Football (CAF) crown the Super Eagles striker as the African Footballer of the Year for 2023.

The former Lille forward saw off stiff a challenge from both Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah to win his first most sought-after continental individual prize.

Here, Sports Brief and NOT JUST OK take a look at the records held by Osimhen as talks of his exit from Napoli fill the air in Italy, with top clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain reportedly interested in signing him this summer.

Top 5 Osimhen Serie A records

1. First African to win Serie A golden boot

In the 125-year history of the Italian Serie A, no African player has won the Golden Boot until Osimhen broke the record last season.

The Nigerian forward became the first African to win the Capocannoniere after netting 26 goals for Napoli on their way to winning the Serie A title in the 2022/23 season.

Osimhen joined the esteemed company of legendary players, such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Ciro Immobile, to receive the best overall striker award.

2. Highest African goal scorer of all time in Serie A

Osimhen displaced former Ballon d’Or winner and Liberia legend George Weah as the highest African goal scorer of all time in Serie A after scoring in Napoli’s fixture against Florentina last season.

Weah’s record stood at 46 goals in Italy’s Serie A before the Nigerian surpassed the mark, now leading the chart of African goal scorers with 58 goals in 97 appearances.

This extraordinary achievement, which will forever leave its mark on the respected league, solidifies Osimhen's position as one of the most prolific and significant African strikers to have played in Serie A.

3. Most goals in a season by an African

Following his remarkable and outstanding performance in the 2022/2023 Serie A season, Osimhen overtook the famed African player Samuel Eto'o to achieve another significant milestone.

Eto'o's record for the most goals scored by an African player in a single Serie A season was broken by the 25-year-old Napoli forward, who scored 26 goals last season.

4. Second player to win Serie A and Golden Boot in same season

Osimhen is the second player to have won both the Golden Boot and the Scudetto in the same season, alongside former AC Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Nigerian star won the Golden Boot after scoring 26 goals in the 2022/2023 season, equalling the feat set by Zlatan when he first set the record playing for Inter Milan in the 2008/09 season.

5. First African to win overall best striker award

In addition to his Golden Boot feat, Osimhen became the first Nigerian and African football player to win the Best Overall Striker award for the 2022/2023 season.

The Super Eagles striker defeated Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku to the prestigious prize.

Arsenal enters race for Osimhen

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that English Premier League giant Arsenal are a strong contender for Osimhen's signature during the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Gunners, who are looking for a marquee centre-forward, are apparently willing to fulfil the Nigerian's high wage demands, along with powerhouses Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.
