  • Ernst Middendorp secured his first win as a Cape Town Spurs with three points against Amazulu
  • Ashley Cupido scored twice off the bench to give the Urban Warriors a kickstart to their season
  • They are now 12 points behind Moroka Swallows who were defeated 1-0 by Polokwane City

Cape Town Spurs' next 13 games could be dubbed 'Operation Catch The Birds'.

The Urban Warriors have Richards Bay FC as their immediate target but the wingless Dube Birds look vulnerable, under-resourced and certain to be pulled into the relegation fight.

Moroka Swallows Chairman, David Mogashoa, taunted Spurs with a provocative tweet following the outcome of their PSL disciplinary hearing, something that could bite the businessman down the line.

Middensdorp's Spurs played with the same attacking adventure they have done for much of the season but did so with a touch more intelligence and grit than their previous 16 matches.

Amazulu may count themselves unlucky as they still played well in their 3-1 defeat, but Spurs were hungrier and executed their game plan well.

By contrast, a missing Steve Komphela personified the drain of quality that The Dube Birds have suffered in recent months.

They have acquired several recruits from the lower leagues and the fringes of PSL squads but were out-scrapped in an untidy display at Dobsonville Stadium by Polokwane City.

Swallows have a winnable cup tie next up before four tough league fixtures against Kaizer Chiefs, Amazulu, Sekhukhune United and Middendorp's Spurs.

Spurs themself will do well to get anything from their intervening matches but closing the gap further before the two relegation candidates meet in Cape Town will be a huge psychological boost.

It could just be one result, but the German boss has a fire in his eyes that seems to have lit a belief in his reshuffled squad.

David Mogashoa mocks Cape Town Spurs

Sports Brief previously reported on the chairman of Moroka Swallows posting a tweet aimed at Cape Town Spurs.

The online comment came As Swallows escaped expulsion from the league for failing to honour two league fixtures.

A far more important scoreline will be decided when the two teams meet in the DStv Premiership on March 31.
