AFCON 2023: Tinubu Rewards Super Eagles Stars With National Award, Plots of Land

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has rewarded the Super Eagles players for their achievement at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after the team picked up a silver medal in Ivory Coast.

The Super Eagles failed to win a fourth AFCON title after failing at the final hurdle, losing 2-1 to the Elephants in the final on Sunday night and depsite that, the Nigerian president appreciated their efforts.

According to the Vanguard, Tinubu rewarded each member of the team with a national award (Member of the Order of the Niger, MON), flats in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, and a piece of land.

President Tinubu made the announcement while receiving players and officials from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The President also praised the Super Eagles, the coach, the crew, and the entire management team for their hard work, dedication, and sacrifice in getting far in the competition.

Super Eagles will bounce back

Meanwhile, Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho believes the Super Eagles will bounce back stronger from the disappointment of their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final defeat, Complete Sports reports.

The 27-year-old forward took to the social media app X (formerly Twitter) to make the promise to Nigerians after they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Ivory Coast in the AFCON final on Sunday.

The team arrived in Abuja, where they have been hosted by the country’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has rewarded the team with national honours for their achievement in Ivory Coast.

Nigeria advised to sack Peseiro

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the Nigeria Football Federation had been advised to sack Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro by ex-international Idah Peterside following the conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Portugal tactician guided the Super Eagles to the final of the tournament but eventually lost 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast as Nigerian failed to win the AFCON for the fourth time.

The Super Eagles have now equalled Ghana’s record as the team to have lost more AFCON final matches with a total of five defeats in the final.
