  • Idah Peterside feels the Nigeria Football Federation should sack Jose Peseiro
  • Peseiro led the Super Eagles to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations
  • The Portugal tactician’s current contract has expired after the AFCON

Former Nigerian goalkeeper, Idah Peterside, has called for the sacking of Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, despite his acclaimed success at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 63-year-old tactician saw Nigeria through to their first AFCON final in over a decade but fell short at the final hurdle after the Super Eagles lost 2-1 to hosts, Ivory Coast.

According to Complete Sports, Peterside has queried Peseiro’s defensive approach to the competition and feels he is not the right manager for the national team.

"You know, a lot of people have asked me, the coach got to the finals. What do you think? I said, 'fire him!'"

The Nigeria Football Federation has yet to confirm Peseiro's future with the Super Eagles, as his contract expired at the end of the tournament in Ivory Coast.

NFF to decide Peseiro's future

Meanwhile, the NFF has reportedly called an emergency meeting to decide on the future of Super Eagles coach, Peseiro, following the conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations, Soccer Laduma reports.

The 63-year-old’s deal was set to expire at the end of the tournament in Ivory Coast, but the NFF will decide whether to renew his contract or allow the Portuguese manager to leave his post as manager.

Some members of the football federation are impressed with Peseiro's results and want him to continue, while some fans are pushing for his exit as they are not satisfied with his performances thus far.

Peseiro offers reason for loss

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Peseiro felt the Super Eagles were not at their best against Ivory Coast, which led to the defeat in the final of AFCON 2023 on Sunday.

The Elephants triumphed 2-1 against his Nigeria team despite going a goal down in the first half to lift their third AFCON title, much to the jubilation of their fans.

The defeat to Ivory Coast means the Super Eagles have lost five of their eight appearances in the final of the AFCON, only winning the title in 1980, 1994, and 2013.
