  • Andre Ayew has broken his silence after Ghana's AFCON exit
  • The Black Stars were exited the tournament at the group stage
  • Chris Hughton has been sacked after Ghana's elimination

Black Stars captain Andre Ayew has become the latest player to apologise to Ghanaians following the team's abysmal display at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d'Ivoire.

The four-time African champions suffered another group stage elimination after throwing away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 in their last Group B game against Mozambique.

The team has come under intense pressure with the 34-year-old Le Havre midfielder being forced to retire from the team by fans of the Black Stars.

"These past days have been very difficult for every Ghanaian, every Ghanaian football fan, and myself. I’d like to apologise for the results in the AFCON that we just exited. We know that we should have done better, that we should have got better results too," Ayew said in a video posted on Instagram.
"To the nation, as the captain of the squad, I take full responsibility for what happened on the pitch," he added.

The former Swansea City forward has promised Ghanaians of a quick turnaround, insisting he does not give up.

"For the playing body, we should have done better, we should have made sure that we bring results to our nation. In football, these are things that happen, these are things that make you stronger, and what doesn’t kill you makes you become a stronger person individually and collectively," continued Ayew.
"We are Ghana, and everybody who knows me knows that I’m never going to give up, meaning we are never going to give up. We are going to rise and shine again. We are going to do that as a family."

Ayew etched his name into the history books, becoming the third player to make an appearance at eight Africa Cup of Nations.

Ayew scores brace for Le Havre

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Andre Ayew returned from AFCON to score a late brace and earn Le Havre a point in the six-goal thriller against Lorient in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

The Black Stars captain rejoined his club on Saturday and was named in the squad for the game 24 hours later.

The veteran forward started on the bench and made the difference after coming on to replace Daler Kuzyaev with 20 minutes remaining.
