Roma players unaware of Mourinho's sacking

Football Italia reported that the players were unaware of the team’s decision to fire Mourinho when they arrived for their morning training session in Trigoria, which was scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. local time.

The report added that the training session was postponed to Tuesday afternoon, which will now be handled by Mourinho’s replacement, club legend Daniele de Rossi.

Owner Dan Friedkin personally informed the Portuguese manager that his time with Roma had come to an end.

He travelled to Rome from the United States to relay the news to Mourinho and the players about the sacking.

Dan and Ryan Friedkin issued a statement regarding Mourinho’s dismissal, saying that they “will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma,” but they “believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.”

Why Mourinho was fired

They lost their patience after Roma hit a poor run of form recently. They are currently in ninth place in the Serie A table despite having the third-highest wage bill in the Italian top flight.

They also suffered an early exit in the Coppa Italia after losing to arch-rivals Lazio, per the BBC. Roma also failed to take the top spot in their Europa League group, which included teams such as Slavia Praha, Sheriff, and Servette.

Mourinho and Afena-Gyan’s strong bond

Sports Brief recently reported on Mourinho buying a pair of Balenciaga shoes for Felix Afena-Gyan.

Mourinho promised the teen star that he would buy him the expensive shoes if he scored against Genoa.

That he did, grabbing a brace in that contest.
