Jose Mourinho and Ghanaian youngster Felix Afena-Gyan shared a father-and-son relationship during their time together at Italian outfit AS Roma.

The Portuguese manager gave the then-18-year-old his Serie A debut in 2021, with the youngster hogging the headlines following his performance against Cagliari.

Afena-Gyan became an instant hit a week later after scoring a brace, his first two goals in the Italian league, as AS Roma defeated Genoa.

Mourinho had promised the youngster before the match he would buy him a pair of Balenciaga shoes if he scored in that game.

The Ghanaian international was then surprised by the manager, who called him to his office to deliver his promise.

"I promised him a very expensive pair of shoes, for 800 euros, and he came to me to make sure I didn't forget," Mourinho told broadcaster DAZN. as quoted by BBC.
"I really like his coldness, his physicality but above all his humility," he added.

An excited Afena-Gyan went on to express gratitude to Mourinho, thanking him for playing a key role in his career.

"He is a great person. He is teaching me a lot and I am learning a lot from him," he said
"He is someone who has achieved a lot during his career and he is a great person. I am glad to be working with him.

Both Afena-Gyan and Mourinho are no longer with Roma, with the latter getting sacked in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Afena-Gyan joined US Cremonese in the summer of 2022 from AS Roma, as reported by 3 News.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Italian giants AS Roma have sacked Jose Mourinho after two-and-a-half years in charge of the club.

The former Chelsea gaffer had a difficult start to the new campaign, with AS Roma sitting ninth on the table after 20 matches.

Mourinho won the Europa Conference League in his first season before reaching the final of the Europa League the following campaign.
