South Africa are heading into the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast not being ranked among the favourite countries to win the title due to their recent performance in the competition.

The Bafana Bafana are grouped alongside Tunisia, Mali and Namibia in Group E and will begin their AFCON journey against the Eagles.

Hugo Broos named his 23-man squad to represent the country a few days ago, hoping to have a better tournament than their last five appearances.

Bafana Bafana's record at AFCON

The Bafana Bafana didn't qualify for the last Africa Cup of Nations, as Ghana and Sudan knocked them out in the qualifying series, according to a report by SuperSport.

South Africa have participated in the competitions ten times with this edition being their 11th.

The latest best run in the tournament came in the 2019 edition in Egypt, where they made it to the last eight but were knocked out by Nigeria.

The Bafana Bafana have played as many as 42 matches in the competition, with their best run of games coming in the 1996, 1998, and 2000 editions.

Bafana has balanced the results in the competition's history in terms of results, as they have won 16 games, drawn 13, and lost 13.

Their last game in the tournament was a 2-1 loss to Super Eagles in 2019.

South Africa has hit the back of the net 48 times in the competition's history, with their biggest win being their 4-1 victory over Namibia in the group stage in 1998.

Former FC Porto striker Benni McCarthy is the country's highest scorer in the tournament with seven goals.

Sports Brief earlier reported that Ivory Coast and Manchester City legend, Yaya Toure has picked his favourite teams to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 2015 AFCON winner surprisingly ignored his own country while listing the nations he believes can win the tournament in Ivory Coast.

Toure cited qualification form as the reason for his selection, with Senegal and Guinea Bissau part of the best.
