Manchester City have proven Sir Alex Ferguson wrong after winning the FIFA Club World Cup, and they have done it in his lifetime – a time he said it would never happen.

Ferguson dominated English football during his almost 27-year reign at Manchester United, winning 13 Premier League titles, two UEFA Champions League, one treble, and three-peating the league twice.

City were an upcoming side after Sheikh Mansoor took over in 2008 and got the tag of “noisy neighbours” from United fans in the way they go after the big guns despite limited achievements to show for it.

Ferguson’s 2009 comments about Man City

Per Squawka, after winning the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup, Pep Guardiola’s men became the first Premier League team to win five trophies in a year. They could have made it the second sextuple of his career if they had won the Carabao Cup.

Ahead of the first derby of the 2009/10 season, Ferguson was asked if the Citizens would ever be top guns and if United would ever go into the derby as underdogs, and his response was demeaning.

Per The Independent UK, the Scottish manager zoomed off his seat at the question before responding on his way out.

“What time is it? I think it is time for me to leave… Not in my lifetime.” he said.

Since making that statement, City have won 7 PL titles to United’s zero. They have won 3 consecutive leagues and a treble only previously done by United.

During Fergie’s time, United never won five trophies in a year; City have achieved that, one of which was an FA Cup win over the Red Devils at Wembley.

All these have happened in his lifetime; he is alive and well and will celebrate his 82nd birthday on December 31.

Pep Guardiola makes history

Sports Brief reported on Guardiola moving clear of Carlo Ancelotti to become the manager with the most Club World Cup trophies after winning his fourth with Manchester City.

Another record he holds over Ferguson, who won the competition only once during his reign at Old Trafford.
