  • Chelsea battled hard to eliminate Newcastle United from the Carabao Cup
  • The Blues needed a penalty shootout to do so after a 1-1 draw in normal time
  • Moises Caicedo was booed by his own fans in the 51st minute for a selfless act

Moises Caicedo found himself on the wrong side of Chelsea fans despite a selfless act of sportsmanship in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on December 19.

The Blues hosted Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge, with both sides looking to keep their hopes for silverware this season alive.

Mauricio Pochettino hasn't had the best of runs, winning only nine games of his first 20 in West London. Eddie Howe, meanwhile, is grappling with a lengthy injury list that saw the Magpies knocked out of Europe last week.

The visitors took the lead against the run of play when a defensive mixup between Benoit Badiashile and Thiago Silva allowed Callum Wilson to creep behind and poke the ball past Đorđe Petrović.

Newcastle held firm despite Chelsea dominating the rest of the proceedings.

They were almost through, only for another high-profile Kieran Trippier mistake to gift Mykhailo Mudryk an equaliser deep into stoppage time. Trippier then missed his penalty with Petrovic saving from Matt Ritchie to send the Blues through.

Why Chelsea fans booed Caicedo

The result sent the Blues fans into delirium, but they weren't quite as happy in the 51st minute with one of their star signings, Moises Caicedo.

Anthony Gordon appeared uncomfortable and went down in the Blues' half, seeking treatment.

Given it wasn't a head injury, the referee and Chelsea players were not compelled to put the ball out of play. Pochettino's men continued to pass the ball around as the Newcastle payers and fans protested.

After what seemed like an eternity, Caicedo decided to put the ball out of play, much to the frustration of the Chelsea fans in the stadium. The Ecuadorian got a show of gratitude from Wilson.

Earlier in the game, Caicedo had fouled Gordon after going in high on his calf. He was fortunate enough only to receive a yellow card for the challenge, with Howe condemning the challenge.

"I thought it was a really poor tackle on him and the type of tackle you don't want to see taking one of our attacking players out of the game, and again, he's very sore at the minute," the coach said as quoted by Sky Sports.

The former Everton man failed to continue as Ritchie took his place for the Magpies.

Mudryk's message to Trippier

Sports Brief also reported that Mykhailo Mudryk showed his noble side with his message to Trippier after the Carabao Cup quarter-final pitting Chelsea against Newcastle United.

It has been a tough few weeks for Trippier, who has been guilty of uncharacteristic mistakes for the Magpies. In the loss to Everton on December 7, he gave the ball away twice.
