Premier League Teams in FIFA Club World Cup: Comparing Past Performances Ahead of Man City’s Debut

The 2023 FIFA Club World Cup is just around the corner.

Manchester City will compete in this prestigious tournament for the first time in their history.

Sports Brief looks at how Premier League clubs have fared in this competition in the past ahead of City’s maiden appearance.

Liverpool (2005)

Liverpool were the first Premier League team to qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup. They booked a spot in the tournament after winning the 2005 UEFA Champions League.

The Reds defeated AC Milan in an epic final in Istanbul. They battled back from a 3-0 deficit in the second half, scoring three consecutive goals in a six-minute span to tie the match at 3-3.

The contest eventually went to penalties, which Liverpool won by a score of 3-2.

The Reds traveled to Japan in December 2005 for the FIFA Club World Championship.

They booked a spot in the final after beating Costa Rican club Deportivo Saprissa in the semis. Peter Crouch scored twice for the Reds, while Steven Gerrard netted the other goal in the rout.

Next up for Liverpool in the championship side were Brazilian side Sao Paolo.

Unfortunately for the Reds, they failed to add another silverware before the year ended as they lost 1-0 in Yokohama. Mineiro scored the winning goal for Sao Paolo in the 27th minute.

Manchester United (2008)

Manchester United qualified for the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup after beating Chelsea in a dramatic Champions League final in Moscow.

The Red Devils made history in that tournament, becoming the first Premier League team to win the event.

They defeated Gamba Osaka 5-3 in the semis, with Wayne Rooney (2x), Nemanja Vidic, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Darren Fletcher the goalscorers for United.

The final was a much tighter affair, with the Red Devils recording a narrow 1-0 victory over LDU Quito. Wayne Rooney scored the lone goal in the 73rd minute, per The Guardian.

Chelsea (2012)

Chelsea were the third Premier League team to qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup. The Blues booked a spot in the tournament after winning the 2012 UEFA Champions League.

Didier Drogba starred for Chelsea in the final, scoring a tough header in the 88th minute to force extra time. The match eventually went to a penalty shootout, which Chelsea won 4-3.

The Blues traveled to Japan in December 2012 for the FIFA Club World Cup.

Chelsea booked a spot in the final after beating Mexican side Monterrey 3-1 in the semis.

Their bid to win the championship was thwarted, however, by Brazilian side Corinthians. Paolo Guerrero scored the lone goal in the 69th minute of the final.

Liverpool (2019)

Liverpool qualified for the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup after beating Tottenham in the Champions League final in Madrid.

The Reds made history in that tournament, becoming the second Premier League team to win the event and the first since 2008.

Liverpool defeated Monterrey in the semis to book a place in the final. The Reds finally got their hands on the trophy in the championship match, beating Flamengo 1-0 in added extra time.

Chelsea (2021)

Chelsea booked a spot in the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup after beating Manchester City 1-0 in the Champions League final.

The Blues made history in that competition, becoming the third Premier League team to win the event,

Chelsea defeated Al-Hilal 1-0 in the semis through a Romelu Lukaku goal in the 32nd minute.

The Blues prevailed in the championship match, beating Palmeiras 2-1 in added extra time. Kai Havertz gave Chelsea the win with his penalty in the 117th minute, per the BBC.
