  • Sevilla suffered elimination from the UEFA Champions League
  • Despite this, veteran Sergio Ramos scored a penalty in the tie
  • The former Real Madrid star set a UCL record with that strike

Sevilla's struggles from last season have continued through the 2023-24 football season.

Despite the euphoria of clinching the 2022-23 UEFA Europa League, the La Liga club have experienced an agonising decline, culminating in a disappointing early exit from the UEFA Champions League.

The fall from grace has been disheartening for both the players and the fanbase.

The dismissal of Jose Luis Mendilibar and the subsequent appointment of Diego Alonso as manager has so far failed to remedy the issues plaguing the La Liga outfit, with the club’s problems on display again in their 2-1 defeat to RC Lens.

This loss, which relegated the Andalusian side to the bottom of their Champions League group, also saw them knocked out of Europe - a reality they were hoping to avoid.

However, amid the prevailing gloom at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan's club, there was a notable moment of positivity as veteran defender, Sergio Ramos etched his name into UCL history.

Ramos makes UCL history

The 37-year-old former Real Madrid captain became the highest-scoring defender in the history of the competition after a goal from the penalty spot in the 79th minute, as reported by UEFA.com.

Ramos, who netted 15 times for Real Madrid and added two more during his return to Sevilla, surpassed former Barcelona defender, Gerard Pique and legendary Brazilian left-back Roberto Carlos, who had 16 goals each.

While the conclusion of his UCL career may not have been ideal, the 2010 FIFA World Cup winner would likely find solace in being a record-setter for something other than his many red cards.

Ramos squares off with Rudiger

During a highly anticipated reunion with Real Madrid, a notable clash ensued between Ramos and Antonio Rudiger on the field, Sports Brief also reported.

The game between Los Blancos and Sevilla was a meeting between two intense competitors but the defender's hot-headed nature did not spark fireworks.

Despite being confronted by Ramos during the game, Rudiger opted for an unconventional response, meeting the aggression with an unexpected reaction.
