Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong has disclosed that the Ghanaian Football Federation contacted him over a potential nationality switch.

However, he decided to represent the country of his birth, making his Holland debut in the Euro 2024 qualifiers against France in October.

Frimpong, who is enjoying a blistering start to the season in the Bundesliga, will become ineligible to play for the Black Stars if he makes over three competitive appearances for the Dutch national team.

According to Frimpong, he has no interest in picking Ghana over Holland, insisting he does not even watch games involving the Black Stars.

“It was nice to finally make my debut. It was against France as well, so it was a nice game. I was really happy about it,” he told Joy Sports, as quoted by Pulse.
“Yes, the coach called me. I had a conversation with him but my mind was already made up,” he disclosed when asked about a contact from the FA.
“No," he responded on watching Ghana games. "I just focus on the Netherlands.”

Frimpong's future at Leverkusen remains uncertain with several clubs showing interest in his services, as reported by Get Football News Germany.

Jeremie Frimpong gets the Netherlands invite

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Dutch-born Ghanaian defender, Jeremie Frimpong earned his debut Holland call-up before the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Bayer Leverkusen right-back put up wonderful performances for his club in the Bundesliga this season and has been rewarded by his debut game by Ronald Koeman.

His sterling display in defense attracted Bayern Munich, as per a report on German outlet Sport1, the German giants are ready to secure his services next season, with Spanish powerhouse Barcelona also said to be interested.

Bayer Leverkusen mocked after Dortmund draw

Sports Brief also reported that Bayer Leverkusen have been mocked on social media after their 1-1 draw with Dortmund over the weekend.

Since taking charge from Gerardo Seoane on October 5, 2022, Xabi Alonso propelled Die Werkself to a fifth-place finish in the Bundesliga and a semi-final appearance in the UEFA Europa League.

Entering the 2023-24 season, Alonso has further elevated Leverkusen's performance, leading the Bundesliga standings and posing a serious challenge to perennial favourites, Bayern Munich.
