  • Manuel Neuer recently penned down a contract extension at Bayern Munich
  • The 37-year-old is deemed largely to be beyond his best years
  • The Bavarian club have drawn up a three-man shortlist to replace the veteran shot-stopper

The future of Bayern Munich's German goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, is currently a topic of debate among the Bundesliga club's hierarchy.

Neuer, who has been guarding the goal for the Bavarian club since his move from Schalke 04 in the summer of 2011, is thought to have passed the peak of his career, prompting the club to consider a long-term replacement for the 37-year-old.

Despite recently penning a new contract until the summer of 2025, as reported by ESPN, Bayern are reportedly already planning for a new era in goalkeeping.

According to @iMiaSanMia, the club has compiled a three-person shortlist of potential successors to Neuer.

Bayern draw up shortlist to replace Neuer

Gregory Kobel

The report highlights Bayern are monitoring Borussia Dortmund's goalkeeper Gregory Kobel.

The Swiss shot-stopper is currently with no release clause in his current contract and could command a transfer fee exceeding €60 million.

Bayern's hierarchy is considering making a move for Kobel when Neuer's contract expires in 2025.

Mike Maignan

AC Milan's French goalkeeper, Mike Maignan, is also on the Bundesliga champion’s radar. While there's nothing concrete at the moment, the report suggests that Maignan is an option to keep an eye on.

Alexander Nubel

The 27-year-old Bayern loanee is currently impressing with Stuttgart and is another candidate to take over from Neuer in 2025.

The club's hierarchy are reportedly impressed with Nubel's performances and believes he could be a suitable replacement. Nubel has not ruled out a future at Bayern.

While the reports of Bayern seeking a replacement goalkeeper comes as a surprise to many fans of Bayern Munich, it has to be recalled that Neuer's skiing accident, which he suffered just shortly after the World Cup in Qatar, appears to have impacted his goalkeeping prowess and it may be a little difficult to see the Bayern captain return to his best form as of old.

Bayern announce Neuer with bricklaying video

Sports Brief in a previous report highlighted that Bayern Munich have announced the contract extension of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

While many Bayern fans are pleased with the club's decision to retain their captain, some have mixed reactions to the unconventional manner in which Neuer's contract extension was announced.

The club took to social platform TikTok, posting a video where the 2014 World Cup winner was constructing a brick wall alongside second-choice goalkeeper Sven Ulreich.
