AFL 2023: What Mamelodi Sundowns Earned for Winning Inaugural Continental Tournament

South African side, Mamelodi Sundowns have been crowned the winners of the 2023 African Football League after defeating Wydad AC in the final of the competition.

The defending Premier Soccer League champions defeated the Moroccan side 2-0 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Sunday, November 12.

The South Africans lost the first leg 2-1, but their second leg victory at home earned them a 3-2 aggregate win to secure the inaugural edition of the tournament.

The second leg was a feisty encounter, with the home side taking the lead through Namibian striker, Peter Shalulile a few minutes before the break.

Aubrey Modiba's goal 13 minutes after restart gave the South African side the deserved win over the Moroccans.

This is the Brazilians' third continental title after winning the CAF Champions League in 2016 and the CAF Super Cup in 2017.

What Sundowns earned as prize money

Mamelodi Sundowns did not only go home with the beautiful African Football League trophy but also went back with a sizeable cheque.

Masandawana's bragging rights were crowned with a whopping sum of $4 million, which works out to R74mil, per a report by iDiskiTimes.

Wydad AC will receive $3mil (R55.6mil) for finishing second, the semi-finalists will receive $1.7mil (R31.5mil), and the quarter-finalists take home $1mil (R18.5mil).

Sundowns beat Wydad to win inaugural AFL

Sports Brief also reported on South African giants, Mamelodi Sundowns defeating Wydad AC to win the first-ever African Football League.

With the victory in the tournament, the ghosts of last year's CAF Champions League semi-final were exorcised for the mighty Masandwana.

Sundowns beat Wydad 2-0 in the second leg of their African Football League final to lift the first iteration of the Continental Super Cup.
