  • Thiago Silva openly expressed his discontent nof missing the Champions League on Tuesday
  • His tweet moments before Newcastle United took on AC Milan went viral
  • Chelsea had a torrid season in 2022/23 as they finished outside European places

Veteran defender Thiago Silva could not hide his disappointment of not playing in the Champions League as he sent out a subtle message on Tuesday, September 19.

Silva, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, is missing out on Europe’s elite footall competition for the first time since 2009.

He is one of the few Chelsea players who have been quite vocal about the club’s state, and his tweet on Tuesday evening was subtle but spoke volumes at the same time.

The 38-year-old was following proceedings of the Group F match involving AC Milan and Newcastle and moments before kick-off, he tweeted a mention of the Champions League before adding some crying emojis.

Silva’s past statements

Only five months ago, the Brazilian was critical of his teammates after Chelsea were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid.

In the wake of the defeat, he spoke in a post-match interview where he said as per SportBible:

"I think the first step has been made. An incorrect step. but it has been made," he said in his post-match interview.
"We can't be blaming managers if we don't take responsibility. It's a hard period for the club with a lot of indecision: change of ownership, new players arriving."

Under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea are yet to gel as a team as their struggles under new owner Todd Boehly continue.

In the first five games, the Blues have only won once, against bottom side Luton Town, and their latest 0-0 draw against Bournemouth led to fans heckling the players at the Vitality Stadium.

Meanwhile, despite playing in the so-called group of death, Newcastle managed to claw a 0-0 draw against Milan, as cited on BBC.

Lazio goalkeeper scores incredible equalizer

Still on the Champions League and Sports Brief reported on Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel’s unbelievable equalizer on his debut in the competition for his club.

In the 95th minute of the match against Atletico Madrid, the 29-year-old made his Champions League debut unforgettable by securing a crucial equaliser.

He expertly headed in Luis Alberto's precise cross, earning the Italian side a valuable point.
