  • Reece James was a hot topic of conversation on Thursday, August 17
  • The newly-appointed Chelsea captain is reported to have suffered a fresh injury setback
  • He only lasted 74 minutes in the Blues’ first league game of the season against Liverpool before getting subbed off

Chelsea fans have been plunged into panic after worrying reports emerged of Reece James reportedly suffering a new injury setback.

James was only recently selected to become the club’s new captain after Cesar Azpilicueta departed for Barcelona in the summer.

As captain, he was present for Chelsea’s opener against Liverpool on Sunday as the game ended in a 1-1 draw. He was withdrawn in the 74th minute.

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino later said that the 23-year-old’s withdrawal was because he was “tired” and not because of injury.

"You need to see from where he came. The first thing we did when we arrived was to assess and analyse all of the players from the past,” Pochettino said, as quoted by Football London.
"He was injured for three or four months. This pre-season was tough for him, we didn't want to take any risk and that is why at 80 minutes, we wanted to avoid the risk."

Days later, journalist Nathan Gissing’s tweet on James went viral, as Chelsea fans now fear the worst.

“Chelsea captain Reece James has picked up a fresh hamstring injury. Due for scan later on today,” his tweet read.

The Athletic further reported that James will be joined in the treatment room by Trevor Chalobah, who is also fighting a nibbling hamstring problem that has reportedly become worse in training.

Chelsea boss Pochettino is set to hold a press conference on Friday ahead of the London derby against West Ham, in which he will provide an update on the two players.

If Reece James is indeed injured, it would be a massive blow to both club and player as he only recently just came back after months on the sidelines.

Chelsea trolled over Olise

Sports Brief also reported on how Chelsea were mocked by rival fans following Michael Olise’s latest decision over his future.

Olise pulled a fast one on the Blues by agreeing a new four-year deal with Crystal Palace when it looked like Chelsea would acquire his services.

The 21-year-old, who grew up in Chelsea’s youth system before leaving at the age of 14, joined Palace from Reading in 2021.
