  • Erling Haaland is the odds-on favourite to win the Golden Boot award this coming season
  • He broke the Premier League's scoring record last season, netting 36 goals for Manchester City
  • Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah, and Marcus Rashford complete the list of favourites

The start of the 2023-24 Premier League season is fast approaching, meaning that it’s time to break down the top contenders to win the Golden Boot.

Erling Haaland ran away with the award last season, setting a new record for goals scored in the English top flight.

Sports Brief looks at the favourites to become the league’s leading scorer this season.

Erling Haaland (Manchester City)

Haaland is gunning for history. He will look to become the first player since Harry Kane in 2016 to defend the Golden Boot trophy.

The Norwegian forward was unstoppable in his first season with Manchester City, scoring 36 goals at the young age of 22.

He eclipsed the previous Premier League record of 34 goals set by Andy Cole for Newcastle in the 1993-94 season and Alan Shearer for Blackburn in the 1994-95 campaign.

He also became the first player since Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah in the 2017-18 campaign to score more than 30 goals in a single season.

He is pegged at -135 to win the Golden Boot award for the second straight season.

Harry Kane (Tottenham)

Kane’s status for the upcoming season remains uncertain, with the England international linked with a mega-money move to Bayern Munich.

Tottenham have rejected several bids from the German giants for Kane, who will be entering the final year of his contract with Spurs.

Kane tied his personal best last season, scoring 30 goals for a Tottenham team that finished eighth in the Premier League table, per Sports Illustrated.

His odds of winning the Golden Boot are priced at +800.

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

Salah gave Liverpool a major boost on Monday when his agent quashed rumours that he will be moving to Saudi Arabia.

He has been a vital cog in the Reds’ recent success, scoring at least 19 goals every season since joining Liverpool in the 2017-18 campaign.

The Reds have added midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister to their lineup, with Salah hoping they can supply him with the necessary assists.

He is pegged at +1000 to win the Golden Boot award again.

Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)

Rashford led the Red Devils in goals last year, scoring 17 in the 2022-23 Premier League season to finish among the top six scorers in England.

Manchester United signed forward Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta, and it will be interesting to see how that will affect Rashford’s goal tally this campaign.

His odds of winning the Golden Boot are listed at +2300.

Writer's Prediction

Haaland (-135) scores at least 30 goals again and wins the Golden Boot award for the second straight season.
