2023-24 Premier League preview

Favourites - Manchester City and Arsenal

It isn’t a complete surprise to see Manchester City installed as -150 favourites to win the Premier League title this season.

They have dominated this competition recently, winning the last three editions. Pep Guardiola’s men made a furious fightback after trailing Arsenal late last season, winning 11 straight games to record another successful title charge.

City's comeback wouldn’t have been possible without the brilliance of Erling Haaland, who scored a record 36 goals in the Premier League last campaign.

Two key players from their championship-winning squad have left the club in recent months, with Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez joining Barcelona and Al-Ahli, respectively.

City have bolstered their team, though, signing midfielder, Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea and defender, Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig.

One team that is expected to give Man City a tough fight this season is Arsenal. The Gunners came close to ending their title drought last year, building an eight-point lead in March before suffering a gut-wrenching late-season collapse.

They strengthened their squad this past summer to prevent that thing from happening again, signing midfielder Declan Rice from West Ham, midfielder Kai Havertz from Chelsea, and defender Jurrien Timber from Ajax.

The Gunners are pegged at +500 to win their first Premier League title since 2004.

Sleepers - Manchester United and Chelsea

It’s been 10 long years since Manchester United were last champions of England. But after finishing third last campaign, the Red Devils will be gunning to end that title drought this season.

Manager, Erik ten Hag, made major changes to his side for the 2023-24 season. Goalkeeper, David de Gea, was let go while defender, Harry Maguire, is nearing a move to West Ham United.

The Dutch coach signed Andre Onana from Inter Milan to replace de Gea between the sticks for United as well as Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta to bolster the Red Devils’ attack.

Mason Mount was also added to their squad to fortify their midfield, per The Guardian. With those new signings, United are certainly an intriguing bet at +1100 to win it all this season.

Chelsea are another team that remain a work in progress. They were wildly inconsistent last season, finishing in 12th place despite making a ton of signings during the January transfer window.

The Blues have hired former Tottenham and PSG manager, Mauricio Pochettino, to provide stability to their side.

He decided to make major changes to his squad, shipping off Havertz, Kovavic, Mount, Kalidou Koulibaly, Christian Pulisic, Edouard Mendy, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek during the transfer window.

The Blues also bolstered their line-up, signing Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Nicolas Jackson, and Robert Sanchez this past summer.

Unfortunately for them, Nkunku will miss the start of the Premier League season after suffering a knee injury during their preseason match against Borussia Dortmund in Chicago, per the BBC.

Chelsea’s squad, as currently constructed, remains a +1400 contender for the championship.

Long shots - Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa

Last season’s disappointing eighth-place finish was a sign that Tottenham still have a long way to go in their quest to become kings of English football.

Spurs have made several signings to bridge the gap, acquiring James Maddison, Pedro Porro, Micky van de Ven, Dejan Kulusevski, Guglielmo Vicatio, and Alejo Veliz during the offseason.

Harry Kane’s future with the club remains uncertain, though, as he enters the final year of his contract.

Spurs are priced at +4000 to win the Premier League title this season.

Aston Villa finished seventh last year, which is in large part due to manager, Unai Emery, who revitalised the side after coming in October to replace Steven Gerrard.

Villa bolstered their side for the 2023-24 season, signing winger, Moussa Diaby, from Bayer Leverkusen and defender, Pau Torres, from Villarreal.

Their odds of winning their first Premier League title are pegged at +15000.

Hojlund dealing with back injury

Sports Brief also reported on Hojlund being ruled out hurt for the start of the Premier League season.

Ten Hag said the former Atalanta striker would miss the start of the new campaign due to a back injury.

The Red Devils forked out an initial fee of £64 million with £8mil in add-ons for the 20-year-old forward.
