Andre Onana has opened up on his decision to snub the No.1 shirt after his summer move to Manchester United.

The Cameroonian recently sealed his much-anticipated transfer move to Old Trafford, ending days of speculation that surrounded his future with Inter Milan.

Onana emerged as a top transfer target for United after it became apparent veteran goalkeeper David de Gea would be departing on a free transfer.

According to Sky Sports, the Red Devils splashed out £47.2million to land the former Ajax shot-stopper from the Serie A giants.

His arrival meant he will be United's automatic No.1, with Dean Henderson facing an uncertain future at the Manchester club.

Onana won't wear No.1 shirt

It has now emerged that the 27-year-old Cameroon international will not be sporting the iconic No.1 shirt at the Theatre of Dreams.

While the shirt number is already vacant after the departure of De Gea, the United summer arrival has elected not to inherit it.

Onana instead opted for the No.24 jersey, with the keeper explaining the reason behind his unusual shirt number.

"I just like that number and it’s my birthday, my date of birth," Onana told MUTV as quoted by Metro UK.
"So for me it’s great and I like this shirt. With this number we have done a lot and I hope this will continue," he added.
