  • Real Madrid have successfully secured the signing of Arda Guler
  • Guler had attracted the attention of FC Barcelona before joining Real Madrid
  • The youngster is not the only player who rejected the Blaugrana for Los Blancos

Real Madrid have completed the signing of Arda Guler from Fenerbahce, the club announced on Thursday.

The 18-year-old, who has emerged as one of the most promising prospects in European football and has been compared to Lionel Messi, penned a six-year deal at the Bernabeu.

Guler had a €17.5 million release clause and Los Blancos paid that transfer fee to beat off competition from rivals Barcelona to sign the teenager.

The attacking midfielder has become the latest player to reject Real Madrid for Barcelona.

The battle between Madrid and Barca sometimes even spills off the field, as the two clubs often want to sign the same players.

Both clubs have launched bids for the same player, and this has led to superstars being able to pick which of the Spanish clubs to sign for.

Madrid does not always come out on top, however, here are the notable players that chose to play in the famous all-white kit.

Dani Ceballos

Dani Ceballos rejected a move to Barcelona in the summer of 2017.

Instead, the Spaniard chose to join Real Madrid, who paid an estimated €18 million to do so. During his first season in Madrid, the midfielder struggled for game time and reportedly regretted turning down Barcelona.

Despite this, Ceballos has pushed his way into Madrid's starting lineup over the past few months, and many now consider him to be Luka Modric's eventual replacement.

David Beckham

After Manchester United's 2003 FA Cup loss to Arsenal, Sir Alex Ferguson launched a boot in the direction of David Beckham's highly marketable face, effectively ending the ex-England captain's time at the club.

Many believed Beckham would continue his career in England, and when the Red Devils accepted a "conditional" offer of £25 million, it appeared that he would be moving to Barcelona, via Bleacher Report.

The "condition" was Joan Laporta's successful election to club president a few months later, continuing the Spanish tradition of presidential candidates basing their campaign on the promise of a megastar signing.

However, Beckham expressed disappointment in Laporta for using him as a "political pawn" in his election campaign. A few weeks later, of course, he became a Galactico at Real Madrid.

Isco

Isco was linked to both Real Madrid and Barcelona in 2013 following a string of standout performances for Malaga.

He ultimately decided to sign with Madrid despite reportedly being a huge Barcelona fan and this was not the first time Isco had rejected the Catalans.

A young Isco reportedly snubbed a move to Barcelona in 2010 because he didn't want to take Catalan language classes. Isco later claimed that in 2017, after Barcelona had contacted him, he had declined them once more because he was happy in Madrid.

Marco Asensio

Marco Asensio has admitted that he was close to signing for arch-rivals Barcelona as a youngster. According to the Spaniard, Barcelona were interested in him during his time at Mallorca.

"Yes, I could have [joined Barcelona], but also to other clubs. There are always great clubs interested who ask about your situation," he said via Sportskeeda.

The Spain international eventually joined Real Madrid in 2014 from Mallorca for €4 million and was immediately loaned back to Mallorca, followed by a loan to Espanyol. Asensio made his debut for Real Madrid in 2016, and the rest is history!

Vinicius Junior

Vinicius Junior, then 16 years old, moved to Real Madrid for almost £40 million despite the fact that he had never participated in a senior match for his former club, Flamengo.

Since Madrid will always regret missing out on Neymar, they were determined not to lose out on the player who many believe to be the future of the Brazilian national team.

According to Vinicius Junior, he chose Real Madrid over Barcelona because he "wanted to play for the biggest club in the world."

Karim Benzema

Karim Benzema rejected advances from Barcelona before opting for his "dream" move to Real Madrid.

The Frenchman established himself as one of Europe's hottest properties during his time at Lyon, for whom he scored 54 competitive goals in his last two seasons in France, following which he was regularly linked with some of the continent's biggest clubs.

Madrid won the race for the France international after having a 35 million euros bid accepted by Lyon, but while Benzema insists the Spanish giants were always his top choice, he confirmed they were not his only suitors.

When asked what other teams that were keen on him, Benzema said, via Daily Mail:

'There were quite a few clubs that contacted me like Manchester (United), Inter Milan and Barcelona, but I decided to come here.
'Real Madrid are an excellent club. I've dreamt about playing here since I was 15 years old.

Mesut Ozil

Mesut Ozil had his pick of clubs to sign for following a string of breathtaking performances at the 2010 World Cup.

Although Arsenal were interested at that time, Barcelona and Real Madrid were the two front-runners to sign him.

In the end, Ozil decided to relocate to the capital of Spain because he thought the club wanted him more. While Jose Mourinho worked tirelessly to persuade the German, who was 21 at the time, Pep Guardiola was unable to personally meet the player.

Before being traded to Arsenal for £42 million in 2013, Ozil played for Madrid for three seasons in a row.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Barcelona was interested in signing Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009, but the Catalans never submitted a formal offer.

The Portuguese star was still playing for Manchester United at the time, and Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly preferred Barcelona to Madrid for the player's next destination.

According to reports, Ronaldo pushed for his desired transfer to Santiago Bernabeu rather than to the Catalans.

Fortunately for us, Ronaldo completed his record-breaking move to the Spanish capital, sparking an epic, ten-year rivalry with Lionel Messi.
