Patrick Vieira is moving back to France.

The 47-year-old has returned to life in the dugout with RC Strasbourg, who have appointed him as manager on a three-year contract.

The Ligue 1 club announced the news on Sunday.

Sports Brief looks at Vieira’s previous coaching stints ahead of his much-anticipated managerial return.

New York City FC (2016-2018)

The Frenchman started his managerial career with the under-23 team of his former side Manchester City, leading the Elite Development Squad from 2013 to 2015, per The Guardian.

Vieira impressed during his stint there, and it was only a matter of time before he became a manager in the senior ranks.

He interviewed to be the next boss of Newcastle United in 2015, but both parties failed to reach an agreement.

The moment that Vieira had been waiting for finally arrived in 2016 when he was installed as the head coach of New York City FC. He signed a three-year contract from the MLS team’s parent club Manchester City.

He excelled in his first season with the club, improving New York City FC’s position from 17th in 2015 to fourth place in 2016. He led the team to the Eastern Conference semifinals, where they lost to Toronto FC.

New York City FC then finished second in the combined MLS standings the following season. They suffered an early playoff exit, however, losing to the Columbus Crew in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Nice (2018-2020)

Vieira decided to take his talents to France, accepting Nice’s offer to become the club’s manager on June 11, 2018.

His first season with the team was a disappointment, though. Nice finished seventh in Ligue 1, just one place above their position in the previous season.

They also failed to make deep runs in France’s cup competitions, losing in the round of 64 to Toulouse in the Coupe de France, and losing in the round of 16 to EA Guingamp in the Coupe de la Ligue.

They improved their standing in the 2019-20 season, finishing fifth in Ligue 1 to qualify for the Europa League.

A poor stretch in the 2020-21 season, though, cost Vieira his job. Nice lost five consecutive games in all competitions and failed to qualify for the Europa League knockout stage, leading the club to terminate Vieira’s contract on December 4, 2020.

Crystal Palace (2021-2023)

Crystal Palace appointed Vieira as manager on July 4, 2021, signing him on a three-year contract.

According to BBC, he helped Palace secure a 12th-place finish in the 2021-22 Premier League season and led the Eagles to the semis of the FA Cup, where they lost to Chelsea.

His stint with the club didn’t last long, though, as he was sacked by Palace on March 17, 2023, after a string of poor results.

They went 12 games without a victory, including a brutal three-game stretch where Palace failed to record a single shot on target.

That move immediately paid dividends for the Eagles, as interim manager Roy Hodgson guided them to an impressive 11th-place finish in the Premier League despite their poor start.

Upset win for Ukraine

Sports Brief recently reported on Ukraine beating France in the quarterfinal of the Euro U21 tournament.

Georgiy Sudakov scored twice to lead Ukraine to a 3-1 come-from-behind win.

They will next face Spain in the semifinals.
