A fitness battle awaits Real Madrid star, Federico Valverde as the season nears its conclusion.

The 24-year-old sustained an injury in Madrid's 4-2 La Liga loss to Girona on April 29, with Carlo Ancelotti deciding not to risk him in the weekend win over Almeria.

AS reports the Uruguayan international did not attend practice in preparation for the game against Real Sociedad, because Ancelotti continued to play it safe with his star midfielder, Luka Modric, who was also ruled out.

If there is any doubt about Valverde's fitness to fly to San Sebastian, the 24-year-old will not do so, per Football Espana.

Ancelotti wants to save him for the Copa del Rey championship game on May 6 against Osasuna, also giving the Champions League semi-final matches against Manchester City top priority.

In order to keep Valverde healthy for European and cup play, those three games are said to be Los Blancos' priorities in the closing stages.

Valverde dreams of Madrid captaincy

Valverde believes he will captain Real Madrid one day, as long as he continues playing at the highest level for the Spanish champions, SB Nation reports.

The Uruguayan was speaking ahead of the La Liga giants' Club World Cup semi-final clash against African champions, Al Ahly on February 8.

Valverde is bidding to win another major tournament with Real Madrid after emerging as a Champions League and La Liga winner with the Spanish giants.

Valverde scores goal of season

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Valverde scoring a cracking individual goal during a La Liga clash against Sevilla on Saturday night in La Liga.

Modric scored the opening goal in the 5th minute, only for Erik Lamela to notch the equaliser in the second half.

Two minutes later, Valverde smashed an unstoppable right-footed shot into the top corner from outside the area to make it 3-1.
