  • Research shows Man United are the biggest beneficiary of calls made by the refereeing technology

It goes without saying that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has played a huge part in some of the biggest results this season in the Premier League.

The 2022/23 campaign has been nothing short of an absolute roller coaster, with fans treated to entertaining football all around.

But amidst all these, one constant through the more than 500 Premier League games played has been the VAR - for better or worse.

According to The Sun, there have been 81 on-field calls overturned on the advice of the men in the booth at Stockley Park, with the calls having a significant impact on the Premier League table.

An analysis crunched by the publication shows that only seven teams would still be in the same place in the table without VAR.

Table toppers, Arsenal and Manchester City are among the teams whose positions would not be impacted with or without the availability of the technology.

The EPL table without VAR

Numbers crunched by The Sun show the Gunners would still be top of the standings without VAR, but two points less than their current 69 tally.

City would still be second - but with 64 points, three more than their current 61.

Tottenham Hotspur would be third with 51 points, three points ahead of Newcastle, who would be sitting fourth.

Man United, who are currently placed third with 50 points, would be down in fifth with 48 points.

Elsewhere, Chelsea would be one place above their current 10th place, while Liverpool would be down in eighth.

The bottom three would still be unchanged, with West Ham, Bournemouth, and Southampton battling the drop.

Conte aims dig at United

Sports Brief also reported on Antonio Conte’s subtle dig at Man United after the Red Devils shipped in six goals against cross-town rivals, Man City.

The Tottenham manager said he preferred to be pragmatic and put players in the best situation while calling out the Red Devils' more proactive style.

Conte was accused of not 'going for it' in the London derby on Saturday by bringing on four defensive-based players for Richarlison and Son Heung-Min.
