  • Chelsea will kick off their UEFA Champions League knockout stage against Borussia Dortmund
  • The Blues travel to Germany for the first leg with a return leg to coming two weeks later in London
  • Fans of the club have been left fuming at Graham Potter over 'defeatist' comments ahead of the match

Chelsea, at this stage of the UEFA Champions League in 2021, had a new manager ready to begin his European adventure after the previous manager who coached the Blues to the group stage was sacked.

Thomas Tuchel was shown the door after a group stage loss to Dinamo Zagreb and his replacement, Graham Potter overturned the club's fortunes after the opening game defeat to qualify top of the group.

The Englishmen now faces the knockout stages for the first time in his career, and a game against Borussia Dortmund awaits at the Signa Iduna Park in Germany.

Potter gives harsh reality check

As reported by talkSPORT, the Blues splashed £330-million on new signings in the January transfer window to fortify their squad for the remainder of the season.

Two draws against Fulham and West Ham after the window closed did not exactly reflect the money spent. Speaking to Evening Standard ahead of the game against Dortmund, Potter gave the fans a harsher reality check.

“In a knockout competition, anything can happen. It’s two games. I don’t think it’s valuable for us to look past Dortmund. We have the capability to beat them but they are also a strong side. We have to understand that,” he said.

Fans' react to Potter' words

The statement was not well received by fans, who have been losing patience with the former Brighton manager after just two wins in the last 13 games.

"What is all these love and light vibes this man is aping? It's a competition for God's sake. We need to win!!! What's all this?"

"I usually look forward to watching or reading Chelsea coach press conferences until Potter. Now I don't even want to hear what he has to say, pre or post."

@HarryOmonoia said:

"Tuchel would have said 'we are here to win, to go all the way. That’s what chelsea is and who we are'"

The last comment was refuted however, with Tuchel once admitting it was 'almost impossible to beat Real Madrid' ahead of their second leg game, as reported by ESPN.

In the German's defence, Chelsea had lost the first leg 3-1 at Stamford Bridge and then had to travel to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium for the second leg.

John Terry warns Potter

Sports Brief also reported on Chelsea legend, John Terry warning Potter that the team needs to settle and start getting results as soon as possible.

The Englishman started his journey with the Blues strongly, including a double header 5-0 aggregate victory over AC Milan in the Champions League group stage.

Todd Boehly continues to reiterate his support for Potter, who was given a five-year contract and a salary of £12-mil per year at Stamford Bridge.
