Lionel Messi capped a glittering international career with the only trophy that has eluded him after winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Argentina star led his country in what was his final game as the South Americans dethroned France to become world champions for the third time.

Messi scored a brace in a thrilling encounter that travelled 120 minutes and had to be settled on penalties.

In photos shared on social media, Messi is seen waving a sea of Argentine fans his final goodbyes after delivering the World Cup.

Messi has now won every major trophy at both international and club level. Last year, he won the Copa America and the Finalissima.

However, if he decides to continue his career, he will have the chance to play in the FIFA Confederation Cup before the next World Cup. The USA, Canada and Mexico will co-host the tournament.

Argentina score epic counter-attack goal

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Argentina seem to be headed for a third World Cup triumph after a blistering first half display against France at the Lusail stadium.

Goals from Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria gives the South Americans a two-goal lead at half-time.
