The Paris Saint-Germain defender then missed his decisive penalty as Croatia advanced to the semifinals. He was understandably devastated after his penalty hit the base of the goal.
Neymar has now revealed what Marquinhos said in the aftermath of that heartwrenching loss. As Marca reports, Neymar admitted that he did not have permission to post the private chats.
"I really wanted everything to go well, but we have to be strong, give it time and see what football has in store for us," Marquinhos told Neymar.
The forward then proceeded to reassure the defender that one penalty miss won't change the perception he had of him.
Neymar uploaded screenshots of these conversations on his Instagram stories alongside those of Rodrygo Goes and captain Thiago Silva.
Rodrygo's apology to Neymar
Sports Brief had reported that Real Madrid star Rodrygo had apologised to Neymar Jr for 'denying' him a chance to win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Neymar's Brazil were sent packing in the quarter-final of the tournament after they lost to the 2018 finalists Croatia.
The Samba Boys were among the favourites to be crowned champions owing to their squad depth which was a mixture of talent and experience.
The match ended 1-1 after extra time, with Neymar initially appearing to have won it for Brazil, only for Croatia to equalise with a few minutes left on the clock. Brazil missed two of their four spot kicks, with Rodrygo missing the most crucial one as the south Americans got eliminated.
